Production of European standards of diagnosis, treatment and care within the various subfields of neurology, is one of the most important aims of EAN. EAN has therefore set-up a Guideline Production Group (GPG), to provide scientific assistance to active task forces and to oversee the work flow.
EANpages: How do you see the role of the Scientific Committee within the overall work of the EAN?
Antonio Federico (AF): The Scientific Committee (SC) is one of the most important EAN committees since its role is to coordinate the activities of the 31 Scientific Panels (SP) and has thus a close relationship with the EAN members. Its role is the promotion of scientific activities and of collaborations within the different European countries.
The Guideline will address important areas of dementia management where the medical doctor plays a pivotal role, which includes treatment of epilepsy in dementia, pain in dementia, treatment with antipsychotics in dementia, vascular risk factors in dementia and systematic medical follow-up in dementia.
In the recent months, the EAN have reorganized its Scientific Panels. This was a rather complex and time consuming procedure, starting with the European National Neurological Societies nominating its representatives for each panel, an approval of EAN individual members who asked to serve in the different Panels, through the call for applications for the Management Group (MG) chairmanship and membership, and ending with the elections, involving more than 1000 EAN Panel members.
