In a marathon debate of the European Council on 20-21 February, where the heads of state and government European Member States meet, representatives failed to agree on the EU budget for 2021-2027. This budget includes Horizon Europe, the next funding programme for research and innovation. Long term budget negotiations are known to be difficult, but this time around the departure of the UK, a major budget contributor, intensified the discussions. It is likely that more European summits will be needed to come to conclusion on this topic.

President’s Page: On the value of European health care funding for neurological patients
December 1, 2016European institutions are sometimes discredited and put into questions. This is particularly true in these times of populistic political movements which try to steer the wheel of European unification backwards. Reasons given by opponents are that ‘European efforts are considered too slow, too burocratic and too inflexible’. ‘There are too many cooks preparing the meal’. Sometimes we hear this also from scientists. The logical conclusion is to spend the money at home in their own countries. The latter view is sometimes even expressed by people who in principle share the European perspective. Populistic politicians go so far to even question the whole EU project. In this respect medical research community can make an argument and a big contribution to the understanding why the EU is important. -

Interview with the Coordinator of the European Affairs Sub-Committee of the EAN: Wolfgang Oertel
January 1, 2015Gian Luigi Lenzi (GLL): As Coordinator of the European Affairs Sub-Committee of the EAN, can you illustrate the role you give to EAN within the community of European Neurologists? Wolfgang Oertel (WO): EAN represents all European Neurologists – from Uzbekistan to Portugal, from Malta to Island and neurologists from all countries which are and/or wish to be closely related to Europe - for example countries around the Mediterranean area. EAN is the one and only professional European society for neurologists. It speaks for the first time ever in the 160 year long history of European neurology with one voice – through the president and the officers. Every neurologist should realize that she/he now has a professional home and a united and powerful society to represent and pursue her or his interest. And neurologists should use this new chance. -
Last month I told you that the bill for brain disease in Europe is €800 billion. To reduce this burden, we need to buy better brain treatment. To make a real long-term difference, we need more research to understand, treat and prevent brain disease better. In the meantime, of course, European and national governments should support healthcare and societal policies which we already know will help, such as reducing smoking, alcohol consumption, obesity and road traffic accidents.
