July 16, 2019It is my great pleasure to be invited to introduce myself to you in my new role as editor of EAN Pages, starting at our Congress in Oslo. I am a neurologist based in Sheffield in the UK, running busy general and neuromuscular clinics, with a research interest in motor neuron disease. Oslo 2019: Plenary symposium 4: Highlight Session Report
July 2, 2019The last day of the Congress and time to take stock. Kell Morten Myhr summarised the field of multiple sclerosis (MS), which received 205 abstracts. Professor Myhr started his highlights with papers by Persson et al from Lexington reporting longitudinal observational survival data in MS and Stahmann et al from Hanover who reported variable rates of starting disease-modifying therapy. Professor Myhr considered that these papers together pointed toward a need to start MS therapy early. Prognostic blood biomarkers were then considered with vitamin D shown to predict long-term disability (Wesnes et al, Trondheim), whilst neurofilament light chain was associated with development of cognitive impairment in secondary progressive MS (Kuhle et al, Basel). -
June 2019 marks the fifth year since the foundation of the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) with the purpose of promoting excellence across the region.

Neurological News from Norway: Health Registries in Norway – an ideal Base for Quality improvement and Research
April 1, 2019The Norwegian population is small, stable, and well organized. Despite having seen increasing urbanization and immigration in recent years, the population of 5.3 million inhabitants is remarkably stable. Specialist health services are close to 100 % publicly financed and equally available to all. All inhabitants have unique Personal Identification Numbers and can easily be identified across a broad range of mandatory and voluntary public registries. Seventeen central, mandatory health registries are being used for health analysis and statistics, quality improvement, research, administration and emergency preparedness. These include the Medical Birth Registry of Norway, Norwegian Cause of Death Registry, Norwegian Patient Registry and Norwegian Prescription Database. -
The award was introduced by Dystonia Europe in 2003 and is presented every two years to stimulate research on dystonia, especially by young scientists in Europe.

January 1, 2019The European Parliament Interest Group on Mental health, Well-being and Brain Disorders (with co-hosting MEPs Tomas Zdechovsky and Nessa Childers), EBC, GAMIAN-Europe, the European Psychiatric Association (EPA), EUFAMI, the Expert Platform on Depression, Eurocarers, the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ECNP), the UEMS – Sector of Psychiatry and the International Federation for Psychotherapy have launched a joint policy paper on major depression, entitled ‘A sustainable approach to depression: moving from words to actions’, at the European Parliament in Brussels. -
