EAN Congress 2025 relocated to HELSINKI due to UN summit (dates remain 21-24 June)

Due to unforeseen developments, the 11th Congress of the European Academy of Neurology has been relocated and will now be held in Helsinki on June 21-24, 2025.

Thanks to the EAN research fellowship, I have worked for one year in the lab of Prof. Edgar Meinl in Ludwig-Maximillian University Institute of Clinical Neuroimmunology in Munich. It was an invaluable experience for me both academically and socially.

Ann Little: Prof Giunti, congratulations for winning the 2016 EFNA Neurology Advocacy Award for Health Professional. Your work in advocating for ataxia patients is highly commended. Could you briefly explain to us the main concept behind your Ataxia Centre in London, which has been put forward as an example of best clinical practice? Paola Giunti: I established the Specialist Ataxia Centre in London over 10 years ago to address my patients’ needs. The ataxias are rare complex disorders, the majority of which are truly multi-systemic with a number of extra-cerebellar symptoms requiring multi-specialist care.

Euroataxia is the federation of European ataxia patient groups which works to drive forward research and treatment of the ataxias. The Federation encourages the free flow of information between members on the latest research, foster and improve contacts between practitioners interested in the ataxias, and people with ataxia, promote co-operation on an international level, and raise awareness of ataxia among clinicians, scientists and society.

Paper of the month: Safer effective treatment for Ménière’s disease
January 3, 2017For January 2017, we have selected: Patel M, Agarwal K, Arshad Q, et al. Intratympanic methylprednisolone versus gentamicin in patients with unilateral Ménière’s disease: a randomized double-blind, comparative effectiveness trial. Lancet Neurol 2016;388:2753-2762. Disabling vertigo attacks and hearing loss are characteristics of Ménière’s disease. In patients with severe and frequent vertigo spells, intratympanic injections of gentamicin have proved to be effective, but at the price of permanent vestibular damage and hearing loss.
