Head injury is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in all age groups. Worldwide, it has been estimated that around 10 million TBIs, serious enough to result in hospitalisation, long term or lifelong disability or death, occur annually. In the EU with a total population of about 330 million, 775,500 TBI new cases are registered per year. The most common causes of TBI are road traffic accidents, falls, struck by or against events, assault/violence and sports or recreation activities. Currently there is no effective treatment to reverse the effects of the primary brain injury. Treatment is aimed at minimising the secondary brain injury that can occur due to the effects of ischemia, hypoxia and raised intracranial pressure.
Different aspects of head injuries are extensively covered in e-brain. The ebrain module on head injuries edited by Peter Whitfield and Pieter Vos consists of 22 sessions each lasting 20 minutes and includes sessions on epidemiology of head injury, head injuries in children, acute head injury management, intensive care and rehabilitation following head injury. The sessions have been written by neurosurgeons neuroanaesthetists and neuropsychologists but are relevant to all specialties that manage these patients.
