The two papers signalled for April 2014 belong to very different aspects of Neurology, or, better, of the Neurological Sciences.
The first one is Application of new Cholesterol Guidelines to a population-based sample , by Pencina MJ, Navar-Boggan AM, D’Agostino RB et al; N Engl J Med, March 19,2014.
This paper ends with the statement “ The new ACC-AHA guidelines for the management of cholesterol would increase the number of adults who would be eligible for statin therapy by 12.8 million , with the increase seen mostly among older adults without cardiovascular disease.”. I am hopeful that our Neuropenews blog will host some letter from our readers regarding costs, side-effects and eventually savings in terms of DALY or QUALY or whatsoever othe index.
The second paper is from the psychological border of our brain sciences, and it is published in Cognition, 131, 159, 2014, by Strohminger N. and S. Nichols; The essential moral self. These AA have studied “what makes me, me, and not you”. As an old scholar of Descartes, and as a today fan of Avatar, I have found this paper fascinating. And reading this paper our Neuropenews friends may be tempted to read similar papers from these AA on “Alzheimer’s challenges notions of memory and identity”.
