Trillions of bacteria live in your gut and, taken as a whole, is what we call gut microbiota. The gut microbial is a moving organ, and has many and unexpected different roles. Studies show how it can influence your body weight, your ability to digest your food, the immune system, the development of your brain, and more.
By studying mice, Rochellys Diaz Heijtz (Karolinska Institute) found that a mammal’s gut bacteria can affect the way the mammal host’s brain develops as it grows up. And even more influence how it behaves as an adult. A new step towards the understanding of human physiology is accomplished.
