The greatest impact of World Congresses is on the majority of neurology trainees and other interested parties who cannot afford to travel great distances. Europe is the most compact continent and Vienna is at its heart. This offers a wonderful opportunity for young, practicing and retired neurologists as well as for internists, psychiatrists, neurosurgeons, rehabilitation specialists and others to attend to what will most certainly be an outstanding Congress. The theme of the Congress is “Neurology in the age of globalization”. In keeping with this theme, the Presidential session will be on “Setting the world neurology agenda”. There will be joint sessions with representatives from the WHO, with the World Psychiatry Association, the European Federation of Neurological Societies, the International League Against Epilepsy, the Movement Disorders Society and the World Stroke Organization. This assures that the Congress will feature not only the most qualified representatives of the different specialties, but that they have been chosen particularly for their ability to convey clear messages suitable for updating in all relevant an related areas of neurology.
The special guest will be Eric Kandel, the Nobel Prize winner who will discuss highlights from his book on “The Age of Splendor” which describes how the Viennese School of Medicine influenced psychoanalysis, psychiatry and the arts.
The networking program will include a concert with compositions by Richard Strauss, Bedřich Smetana, Giuseppe Verdi and Johann Strauss and the premiere of a composition by the President of the World Federation of Neurology (WFN) at the Musicverein, where the annual Vienna New Year concerts take place.
In addition to travel scholarship and the usual registration discounts, for the first time, seniors, neurologists over the age of 65 years will be offered a special rate.
Eduard Auff , President of the Congress, Wolfgang Grisold, Co-Chair of the Education Committee of the WFN and in charge of the teaching courses, Werner Poewe, Co-Chair of the Scientific Program Committee with Donna Bergen, Chair of the Applied Research Committee of the WFN and the members of the Austrian Society, the European Federation of Neurological Societies and the WFN are working hard to make this the best World Congress of Neurology yet!
It will be a decade before such a Congress will be held in Europe again. Come to Vienna from September 21-26, 2013, meet with your colleagues of all ages, countries and interests and help advance neurology in a globalizing world.
