A new paper published in Nature Reviews Neurology, titled Inclusion in neurological research: empowering people living with neurological diseases, offers a cogent overview of patient involvement in medicine in the context of public participation in democratic processes, with a historical overview and engaging examples.
The value of involving people with diseases in research is increasingly recognised. Patients now contribute to prevention, diagnosis, medication planning, advocacy, guideline production, and clinical trial design, and the involvement of patient experts, who collaborate with researchers and clinicians, has empowered patients. This paper reviews the current state of patient involvement in neurological research and explores the roles of patient experts in advancing neurological studies.
The paper closes with a call to action to increase and improve the way we collaborate with patients.
