Welcome to the first edition of the President’s Corner, a new article series that I am launching to generate direct interaction with the EAN community. Each month, I will ask for your questions, to get a sense of the issues that are important to you and better understand your feelings and needs, and I will answer them here on eanNews.
Back in December 2024, we appealed for questions for the first edition of the President’s Corner via our social media channels. I am pleased to see that you have positively reacted to my initiative, sending interesting questions. You can find my answers below.
Please look out for posts appealing for your questions for next month’s edition of the President’s Corner, or feel free to submit them at any time via email.
I look forward to receiving and answering your questions and getting to know each other better!
Best wishes
Elena Moro, EAN President
Why did you decide to implement the Anita Harding Award? Is it dedicated to a special topic within neurology or rather to make women in neurology more visible?
The topic of inclusivity is very important to the EAN. When looking carefully at the congress programme, we found that the three named award lectures held during the Presidential Symposium at the EAN Congress are all named after men. Therefore, me and my colleagues from the EAN Board felt it was mandatory to have an award named after a woman and to be given to women. We specifically want to highlight the major scientific achievements of women in neurology and neurosciences, and, by honouring them, to inspire younger female neurologists and neuroscientists to pursue their careers.
We have received many nominations for the award lectures in 2025 and 2026, and the presenters have already been selected. The identity of the first ever recipient of the Anita Harding Award, as well as details of the lecture she will deliver at the EAN Congress 2025, will be revealed very soon.
Why did the European Journal of Neurology become an open access journal with the need to pay to publish accepted articles?
The EAN Board started to consider the possibility of going Open Access with the European Journal of Neurology in 2017. The main idea is the democratisation of knowledge to allow readers and researchers from all over the world to access peer-reviewed scientific content without paying for it. Also, more and more funders for grants are requesting that research outcomes are published in Open access journals.
As the publication costs still need to be covered, the authors are asked to pay. Usually, these costs are covered via the authors’ institutions or can be included in a grant request, and there are several opportunities to get waivers or reductions for the article processing charge (APC).
Institutions affiliated to open access can be found here: Institutional Payments | Wiley
Information on waivers and discounts can be found here: Reasons to publish open access with European Journal of Neurology – eanNews
In which way can a Latin American member of the EAN contribute or participate?
The EAN welcomes neurologists and health care providers from all over the world, including those from Latin America, who can become EAN Corresponding Members and thus participate in many EAN activities, such as the eanCampus and the EAN Congress. They can even join and contribute to the EAN Scientific and Coordinating Panels.
Most of our educational activities are also open to members of the EAN Resident & Research Fellow Section (RRFS) from Latin America.
More information on EAN Corresponding membership can be found here: Corresponding Member – ean.org
What is the congress about, can you share details?
The EAN Congress is the main congress in Europe especially for clinical neurologists and neurology trainees. It covers all you need to know about sub-specialties of neurology, and gives an outstanding overview of the latest developments in neurology and neuroscience. We offer different session types, such as symposia, teaching courses, interactive sessions, and hands-on courses. You can find lots more information and the full programme on our congress website: EAN 2025 – Home
