The 3rd edition of the EAN Science School took place on 15-19 March 2024, in Salzburg, Austria. It gathered 57 young clinicians from 22 countries, united by their passion for neuroscience. The event started on Friday with warm opening remarks from Guido Stoll, the esteemed organiser of this forward-thinking school, from Würzburg.

The first day featured Dr Nina Corsini, from Vienna, who ignited our curiosity with a captivating talk on cerebral organoids, while Prof. Silvia Bonelli, also from Vienna, delved into the “connectomics” approach and its implications for various neurological disorders. Erich Kvas, from Graz, infused statistics with excitement and practicality through a mesmerising presentation.

To wrap up the day, we explored Salzburg’s historic city centre on a guided walking tour followed by a delightful Austrian dinner at a local restaurant.

Sunday’s agenda was equally enriching. Prof. Alberto Vogrig, from Udine, shed light on the emerging role of T-cells engineering in autoimmune disorders, while Prof. Claudio Bassetti, from Bern, provided profound insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying sleep and its therapeutic implications. Prof. Veerle de Herdt, from Gent, expanded our understanding of the link between stroke and seizures, and future research directions.

The final day commenced with a lecture by Frank Winkler of Heidelberg, exploring the communication between neurons and cancer cells, and the immune strategies employed to modulate this interaction. Dr Maria Teresa Ferretti, from Vienna, delivered a compelling talk on the nuanced roles of sex and gender in neurological diseases, sparking impassioned discussions during the afternoon workshop aimed at addressing related disparities and finding solutions. Lastly, Prof. Antonio Pisani, from Pavia, gave us insights into Parkinson’s disease models and shared invaluable tips on study design and publication strategies.
The afternoon workshops are truly a distinguished aspect of this school, which serve as open discussions with a practical approach, beneficial for young clinicians and neuroscientists to glean insights directly from experts in the field.

I had the honour of talking to these amazing participants about all the myriad opportunities offered by the RRFS but mostly, the privilege to meet all these outstanding colleagues, exchanging visions, sharing knowledge and hopefully, establishing long-lasting connections.
