by the EAN Guideline Production Group
One of the goals of the EAN Guideline Production Group (GPG) is to increase the guideline development capabilities within the EAN by providing avenues for members to learn the necessary skills and know-how, one of which is the EAN Guidelines Workshop.
After a successful 1st EAN Guidelines Workshop in 2022, the GPG once again organised a workshop one day prior to the EAN Congress 2023.
Dr Joao Costa, Co-Chair of the GPG, welcomed the participants and briefly introduced the workshop.
The workshop is a compact but comprehensive walkthrough of the guideline development process, covering the following topics:
- Construction of PICOs
- Construction of evidence profiles
- Summary of findings
- Evidence to Decision Process
- Development of the Recommendation
Participants eagerly worked through the topics together in smaller groups, carefully scrutinising the available materials and exchanging ideas with one another in order to complete the assigned tasks. The groups were guided by the GPG members: Joao Costa, Katina Aleksovska, Luca Vignatelli, Teia Kobulashvili.
Each working session was then followed by a plenary session, where all four groups presented their interim results and GPG members provided their insights. From the lively discussions, you could already see the desire to learn and gain full mastery of the subject matter.
During the workshop, participants all showed high motivation, willingness to make a difference, and team spirit. The technical skills they learned are of course important; however, these three qualities are what makes a good guideline developer a great guideline developer. After this workshop, we are very optimistic that the future of EAN guidelines will be bright, and we are looking forward to holding another workshop next year!
