EAN President, Prof. Claudio Bassetti, and Prof. Alexis Arzimanoglou, Coordinator of the European Reference Network for Rare and Complex Epilepsies (ERN-EpiCARE), are pleased to announce that EAN and ERN-EpiCARE have signed a memorandum of understanding to promote and maintain the harmonisation of training and clinical practice in Europe and advance optimal care and management for patients with rare and complex epilepsies in Europe.
This new collaboration aims to enhance education and scientific endeavour. Jointly, the two organisations will be able to work more effectively towards the recognition of the importance of rare and complex epilepsies and the strengthening of funding for research in Europe.
EAN and ERN EpiCARE have agreed to collaborate on enhancing education by working on joint webinars and encouraging the attendance of members at relevant educational events, for example. Another key area for delivering on common goals is potential cooperation on best practice guidelines and recommendation papers.
The two organisations’ mutual aspirations are complementary and fit well together.
ERN-EpiCARE will be invited to identify a representative who will join the EAN Coordinating Panel on Rare Neurological Diseases as well as the Management Group of the EAN Scientific Panel on Epilepsy.
Future cooperation will support improvement in the care of patients living with rare and complex epilepsies in Europe through the uniform dissemination of the highest standards of diagnosis and practice.
