Every year the EAN Board awards a maximum of two new Honorary Memberships and two Service Awards to the EAN community.
The EAN Honorary Membership is among the most prestigious awards of the Society. Nominees for the EAN Honorary Membership are internationally recognized distinguished people, who have brought outstanding contribution in the field of neurology/neuroscience.
The EAN Service Award recognizes persons who demonstrated sustained and exceptional commitment to EAN. It is presented to a very limited number of outstanding members of the neurological community for their service to Neurology and EAN.
We are happy to announce, that the 2021 Honorary Memberships have been awarded to Professor Günther Deuschl, Germany and Professor Philip Scheltens, The Netherlands.
Professor Deuschl has been recognized for his remarkable research on movement disorders which contributed to establishing deep brain stimulation as standard treatment for Parkinson’s disease, and his exceptional dedication and leadership in the early development of the EAN.
Professor Scheltens has been chosen for his outstanding research on dementia and contribution on biomarkers which opened the possibility for early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease.
The Service Award for 2021 has been given to Professor Marianne de Visser, The Netherlands in recognition of her involvement in the evolution and management of the EAN, including the promotion of diversity and innovative learning programs.
The awards will be presented during the 7th EAN Congress in Vienna, Austria, 19-22 June 2021 and handed over, hopefully in person, during the 8th EAN Congress in 2022.
I take this opportunity to sincerely congratulate all three awardees, distinguished members of the EAN community, and thank them for all their contributions.
