Survey for medical societies, created by the BioMed Alliance CME Experts Committee
Patient involvement in the education of healthcare professionals has been identified already several years ago as a priority[1][1] to ensure the future health workforce have the skills, knowledge and attitudes to practice truly person-centred care – including shared decision-making, listening, supportive and effective communication, empathy and partnership. The training of professionals will need to be adapted, but the skills of currently practising professionals will also need updating.
The latest State of Health in the EU companion report (2019) identifies five key trends on the health workforce, including the digital transformation in healthcare and the need for new skill-mix and roles for all kinds of healthcare professionals. The report refers to the need for involvement of patient organisations in this area.[2][2] EPF is also collaborating with BioMed Alliance[3] on promoting high-quality CME/CPD of which patient involvement forms one important element.
Our first step is this survey on the patient involvement in CME/CPD activities.
We hope to gain a better understanding of how common it is for patients to participate, what kind of activities they participate in, and what their experiences are like. EPF is running a similar survey in parallel ith its own patient association members to get their perspective.
We will use the survey results to identify gaps and need for further actions as well as planning specific activities towards increasing patient involvement in CME/CPD.
