Combining an academic career with the clinical work is one of the many challenges faced nowadays by neurology resident and neurologist at the beginning of their career. As the number of clinician/scientists grows, the opportunities and potential paths one can choose is also growing exponentially.
However, combining a clinical and academic career, and on the top of that a often-demanding personal life is a challenge for which many of us are still learning how to reach a correct balance. Therefore, it is often difficult to decide when to start pursuing an academic/research career: should it be during residency training or afterwards? Is it essential to enter a Ph.D. program to be a clinician-researcher?
With all these questions in mind, the Resident and Research Fellow Section organized a session entitled “EAN-Residents and Research Fellow Section: Ph.D. and the Neurology residency: Why, when and how?” taking place on June 20, 2021 from 16:45 – 18:15.
We plan an interactive session with four bright RRFS members and former members that pursued different professional trajectories and have excelled at them. Our speakers will describe their career path, explain why they decided (or not) to pursue a Ph.D. at that particular stage of their training (or even before), and discuss, from their personal experience, what are the main advantages and challenges they faced combining clinical and research work. The main aims of this session are:
- To provide examples of the different career paths that are possible for young physicians who intent to pursue a clinical and research career in Neurology.
- To provide examples of career planning which integrate clinical or research experience with the Neurology training.
- To exchange experiences regarding the main advantages and the major challenges a young physician/young neurologist might endure while combining clinical and research work at the different stages.
