Open letter on the future of research:
Addition research to official title Commissioner Mariya Gabriel
The BioMed Alliance supported an open letter to change the new official title of Commissioner Mariya Gabriel to include the word ‘research’.
The letter is signed by more than 11000 people, including Nobel Prize recipients and a number of medical societies. The BioMed Alliance’s supporting statement can be found here: https://www.biomedeurope.org/news/2019/173-biomed-alliance-joins-scientific-community-initiative-calling-for-inclusion-research-in-new-job-title-commissioner-gabriel.html
The BioMed Alliance’s Board of Directors considers it essential to include the word ‘research’ in the official title of the Commissioner-Designate to reflect the importance of research to the EU and to ensure support for all aspects of research. The open letter calls for changing the official title of Mariya Gabriel from ‘Commissioner for Youth and Innovation’ to ‘Commissioner for Education, Research, Innovation and Youth’. You may remember that “research” will no longer be in the official title of the Commissioner dealing with this portfolio and that the portfolios for Research and Innovation and Education, Culture, Youth and Sport would be combined.
Feel free to support the letter and to promote it among your contacts to ensure a greater impact. While the deadline for expressing support was set on 23 October, it may also be accepted after this date.
More information on the open letter is available here: https://www.futureofresearch.eu/ You may also find the e-mail that I sent to you a few weeks ago on the new Commissioners below.
