This year, at the annual hospital visit of the Resident and Research Fellow Section (RRFS) of the European Academy of Neurology, nearly 80 resident and research fellows visited to the Neurology Department of the Rikshospitalet, organized with the support of Dr. Silje Bjerknes, local resident and PhD candidate.
The visit started at the Conference room of the Hospital, where Professor Hanne Flinstad Harbo, Head of Department, provided an introduction of the general structure of the Department at Rikshospitalet and also at Ullevål Hospital. Afterwards, Professor Mathias Toft focused on emergency neurology and on the astonishing increase in thrombectomies in the past year. Finally, Professor Sigrid Svalheim provided some insight of the regional responsibility the Department has, providing neurological care to a population of 3 million people. She also described to the attendees the close collaboration the Department has with Neurosurgery and Neuroradiolgy and explained the different treatments the Hospital offers to advanced Parkinson’s disease patients, namely Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery or Duodopa.
Subsequently, the attendees were divided into smaller groups and guided to different wards, including the stroke unit, Neurosurgery ward or the Neuroradiology department, the latter fully equipped with 5 MRI machines and an angiography room to endovascular treatment. Afterwards, participants were guided to the outpatient clinic, where they were able to visit the Neuro-urology and the ultrasonography rooms. Then they visited neurophysiology department, where the chain of care in epilepsy in the hospital was explained and where they were encouraged to ask questions regarding the different techniques.
Finally, in the auditorium of the University, Professor Mathias Toft, explained the increase in research production the Department had in the past decade and some of their most recent projects.
The day ended with a small get-together with food and drinks, where participants could network among themselves and with the organization.
