On Tuesday, April 9, 2019, Active Citizenship Network (ACN) celebrated the 13th European Patients’ Rights Day (EPRD).
This multi-stakeholder conference entitled “Delivering patient value throughout the healthcare system. An electoral debate on citizens’ expectations” took place in the European Parliament and was the forum for an electoral debate on citizens’ expectations for “delivering patient value throughout the healthcare system”.
The meeting was hosted and chaired by MEP Brando Benifei, and MEP Elena Gentile.
Among the eminent panelists’ delegates of the European Commission – DG Santé, the European Parliament and major patient associations could be counted. Priority topics linked to healthcare policies at EU level, including health promotion & disease prevention, value of and access to innovation were discussed.
Prof. David B. Vodušek took part in the meeting as an expert panelist for the session dedicated to access to innovation and the value of the patient-centered approach. Among examples put forward to illustrate the major differences in patient access to innovative treatments across Europe he mentioned stroke and suggested that EU parliamentarians for the next term should consider the proposals formulated by the “European Stroke Action Plan” developed by SAFE – Stroke Alliance for Europe in cooperation with ESO – European Stroke Organisation and do what they can to spread good practices developed in some European countries to the rest of them.
