As in the previous years, EANpages asked EAN committee members, panel chairs, and invited speakers which session one should not miss at the upcoming congress in Lisbon 2018. Please find their answers below!
Rolf Fronczek, MD, PhD

Special Session 5: Neurological disorders of famous composers
on Sunday June 17th, 2018 between 08:00 am and 09:30 am
I personally think it is important that the European Academy of Neurology meeting is not only focused on hard-core clinical and basic science. Neurology – being a neurologist – is so much more than that. Sessions such as ‘neurological disorders of famous composers’ add flavour and depth to our specialty. I am thus looking forward to hearing more about neuro-musicology… Ravel, Haydn, Beethoven, Schumann, Gershwin…
Luca Massacesi, Prof. Dr
Co-Chair of the EAN Scientific Panel Neuroimmunology
University of Florence, Italy
Plenary Symposium 2: Presidental Symposium: Named Lectures
on Sunday June 17th, 2018 between 10:00 am and 12:00 am
Three of the best European scientists, among them particularly for me Hartmut Wekerle, will review the main achievements of their careers. An appointment that cannot be missed.
Simon Podnar, Prof.
University Medical Centre Ljubljana, Slovenia
Case-based Workshop 9: Imaging selection of stroke patients for specific treatment interventions
on Tuesday 19th, 2018 between 08:30 am and 10:00 am
I believe this is very important issue nowadays.

Symposium 6: Coma: Neuromodulation, imaging and neurobiology
on Monday 18th, 2018 between 03:00 pm and 05:00 pm
Per Soelberg Sȍrensen, Prof. Dr

Focused Workshop 1: Brain health in multiple sclerosis: a catalyst for a new approach to management
on Saturday June 16th, 2018 between 08:30 am and 10:00 am
The focused workshop of brain health in multiple sclerosis is of great interest. The costs of MS treatment in Europe are increasing considerably because of the increase in MS incidents and new expensive disease modifying therapies. It is important to emphasize early treatment, but also to realise that the patients journey of the MS course may include occurrence of co-morbidities that have significant impact on treatment response and prognosis. The workshop will also focus on improvement tools designed to support the core objectives of the global MS brain health initiative. The proposed incorporation of these tools into the clinical management of MS needs discussion and refinement in order to disseminate the initiative across Europe.
Plenary Symposium 2: Presidential Symposium: Named Lectures
on Sunday June 17th, 2018 between 10:00 am and 12:00 am
Presidential symposium: “Named lecturers” is a must in order to listen to the achievements of giant researchers in clinical and basic neurology.
Klaus Viktor Toyka, Prof. Dr
Member of the EAN Scientific Panel Muscle Disorders
University of Würzburg, Germany
Plenary Symposium 2: Presidential Symposium: Named Lectures
on Sunday June 17th, 2018 between 10:00 am and 12:00 am
The three Named Speakers have contributed substantially to three major fields of Neurology Research, both clinical and experimental. It is of high interest for more junior physician scientists to understand how progress has been made before they had entered academic neurology.
Peter Van den Bergh, Prof. Dr
Co-Chair of the EAN Scientific Panel Neuropathies
Neuromuscular Reference Centre
University Hospital St-Luc, Brussels, Belgium
Plenary Symposium 3: Overarching Theme: Molecular and genetic therapies for neurogenetic disorders
on Monday June 18th, 2018 between 10:00 am and 12:00 am
Molecular therapy for neurogenetic disorders has made spectacular progress, in particular in neuromuscular disorders. Whereas progress in muscular dystrophy (DMD) is very slow and difficult, results in SMA and ATTR (amyloid) neuropathy are overwhelmingly positive.
Simone Veronese, MD
Fondazione FARO, Turin, Italy
Symposium 4: EAN/EAPC: Palliative care and neurology
on Saturday June 16th, 2018 between 10:00 am and 12:00 am
I am a palliative care specialist involved in research and clinical practise with neurological patients. I think this session will be very interesting since we are trying to create connections between neurologists and palliative care professionals.
EAN and EAPC are strongly committed to achieve this goal and I feel that patients, families and professional will benefit in the near future from this collaboration.
Therefore, I strongly advocate for this symposium, and wish that many colleagues will be able to attend and discuss with us.
