eBbrain e-learning programme (http://www.ebrainjnc.com) is a gold standard in interactive online learning tool for professionals in neuroscience. The vast majority of important neurological topics are already covered by eBrain. The others are in the process of developing. The module on degenerative neurological diseases, including dementia – one of the most important public health issue of our time – presents exhaustively the basic knowledge as well as the last achievements in this field of neurology. It is necessary to mention that some 1% of persons aged 60 to 64, but 30% to 40% of those over 85, suffer from dementia. The age-specific prevalence of dementia roughly doubles every 5 years after age 60. Persons with a large fund of knowledge and varied interests are less likely to become demented in old age.
The module on neurodegenerative diseases is divided into two sections. The first (topic 10 consist of 17 sessions each lasting 20 min) focuses on the dementias with sessions on the epidemiology, the approach to diagnosis, the investigation, clinical aspects, treatment and care. The conditions considered include Alzheimer’s disease, dementia with Lewy bodies, frontotemporal dementia, cerebrovascular disease and the less common conditions including prion disease. The second section (topic 18, 5 sessions) deals with spinal cord diseases including degenerative spinal disease and also its medical and surgical management, the congenital spinal disease and diagnosis, investigation and management of back pain.
