The EAN Education Committee has reviewed 30 applications for the 2025 Research Fellowship Programme and we are happy to announce and introduce the recipients below. Many of the applications received very high scores and the committee is delighted to see such great research projects.
We would like to encourage all neurologists who are still in their residency to apply for future fellowships and take advantage of this opportunity, not only for the financial support but for the opportunity to get to know experts, see how they work, and become part of the wider EAN networking community for your future career.
The recipients of the 2025 Research Fellowships are as follows:

Research Training Fellowship 2025:
Lucas Barea Moya from Spain was selected for his project, MS-injury modelling based on personalized brain organoids, which he will carry out at the Heidelberg Institute for Stem Cell Technology and Experimental Medicine (HI-STEM) – Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum (DKFZ), Heidelberg, Germany, under the supervision of Dr Marc Thier.
Alessandro Bertini from Italy was selected for his project, Untangling the ‘dark’ genome: long-read sequencing in undiagnosed inherited neuropathies, which he will carry out at the Department of Neuromuscular Diseases, UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology and The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, London, UK, under the supervision of Dr Andrea Cortese.
Grazia Falcone from Italy was selected for her project, Dissecting phenotypically and genotypically monogenic peroxisomal disorders from a movement disorder perspective, which she will carry out at the UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology, London, UK, under the supervision of Prof. Kailash Bhatia and Dr Francesca Magrinelli.
Federico Mazzacane from Italy was selected for his project, The role of intracranial carotid artery calcifications in intracerebral hemorrhage hematoma expansion, which he will carry out at the Institute of Neuroradiology, Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Germany, under the supervision of Dr Jawed Nawabi.
Magdalena Mroczek from Switzerland was selected for her project, The Role of Ischemia in the development of Diabetic Neuropathy, which she will carry out at the Department of Clinical Neurophysiology/Neurology, Aarhus, Denmark, under the supervision of Prof. Hatice Tankisi.
Markus Ponleitner from Austria was selected for his project, Characterization of iron deposition in and around white matter lesions as a possible biomarker in adult cerebral X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (CALD), which he will carry out at the Department of Neurology, University Hospital Leipzig, Germany, under the supervision of Dr. Christa-Caroline Berger and Dr Wolfgang Köhler.
Francesca Torri from Italy was selected for her project, Development of a novel gene therapy approach for Pompe disease through dCAS9- mediated transcription regulation of the GAA gene, which she will carry out at the TedescoLab, University College of London, UK, under the supervision of Prof. Francesco Saverio Tedesco and Dr Sara Benedetti.
Research Experience Fellowship 2025:
Giulia Sofia Cereda from Italy was selected for her project, Novel insights into anti-CV2/CRMP5 paraneoplastic neurological syndrome, which she will carry out at the Reference Centre for Paraneoplastic Neurological Syndromes and Autoimmune Encephalitis, Hospices Civils de Lyon, Neurological Hospital, France, under the supervision of Prof. Jérôme Honnorat.
Claudia Ledda from Italy was selected for her project, Deep Phenotyping and Genotyping of Paroxysmal Movement Disorders, which she will carry out at the UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology, Neurogenetics Research Lab, London, UK, under the supervision of Dr Francesca Magrinelli.

New applications can be submitted throughout the entire year and will automatically be considered for the next application round for 2026.

The Research Fellowship is supervised and reviewed by the EAN Education Committee together with topic-specific Scientific panels.
