The European Brain Council (EBC) has launched a public consultation on the European Charter for the Responsible Development of Neurotechnologies, which will be accessible until 8 December 2024 at 23:59 CET. All members of the EU brain community are encouraged to provide their insight to help refine the document.
Neurotechnologies have great potential to foster mental and neurological health. The growing accessibility and portability of neurotechnologies have expanded their use beyond the medical field and into the general consumer market (work, education, entertainment and marketing) raising crucial ethical and societal issues. The EBC has brought together, in a co-creation and bottom-up approach, a large representation of actors from the public and private sectors to elaborate ethical guidance for the successful development of medical and non-medical neurotechnologies in Europe.
Building on existing mechanisms of governance and complementing existing legislation, the European Charter for the Responsible Development of Neurotechnologies ultimately aims to promote a culture of stewardship and trust in neurotechnologies, support greater wellbeing and sustainable economic growth of the field, and guide public policy, activities of companies and investments.
