The European Academy of Neurology (EAN) was created in 2014 by a merger between its two ‘parent’ societies: the ENS (founded in 1986) and the European Federation of Neurological Societies (EFNS, founded in 1987).
As the EAN celebrates its tenth anniversary in 2024, nine former presidents of the European Neurological Society – three of whom were also ENS founders – have collaborated to publish an Open Access article charting the course of the ENS, based on recollections and documents, ten years on from its dissolution.
The article delves into the history of neurology prior to the existence of any of these organisations and provides a detailed history of the founding of the ENS, its meetings, journal, finances, bodies, and goals, as well as an account of the long process of negotiations with the EFNS and preparing to establish the EAN.
Dive into the prehistory of the EAN and read the full article in our official journal, the European Journal of Neurology.
