EAN considers the production of neurological guidelines a major obligation, as they are tools for improving clinical practice in neurology. Guideline Taskforces (GLTFs), usually established by EAN Panels, are responsible for developing these guidelines.
The EAN Guideline Production Group (GPG) guides each GLTF through all the steps of the EAN guideline development procedure, from proposing a guideline topic to formatting and writing a protocol and the guideline itself. One of the most crucial steps that often determines the quality of a guideline is the writing of a protocol.
In an initiative led by Prof. Kristian Steen Frederiksen, the GPG has developed a template for EAN guideline protocols. The template will ensure that all necessary components for a guideline protocol are present, so that high-quality guidelines may be produced. Furthermore, it will help to reduce both review time of the protocol and requests for revisions from the GPG. The template may be modified by the GLTF where relevant, and a protocol does not need to follow the template to ensure approval. In some instances (e.g., rare diseases) the protocol template may be less useful.
You can find the new EAN Guideline Protocol Template in the Important Documents section on the right-hand side of our About EAN Guidelines for Neurologists website or download it via the button below.
With this useful new tool, the EAN is very enthusiastic about our current guideline production, which is increasing in quantity as well as quality.
