Professor Schneider spoke about metabolic movement disorders using a treatment-based approach, with Wilson’s disease, PKAN, GLUT1-spectrum disorders, Gaucher and GBA-associated Parkinson’s disease as examples.
Afterwards, Professor Taba approached toxic movement disorders, and the damage caused by metal and illicit drugs on the basal ganglia and their clinical presentation, including manganism, acquired hepatocerebral degeneration, “mad hatter syndrome” caused by mercury, and also hyperkinetic disorders caused by amphetamines or cocaine.
Then Professor Angela Vincent spoke about autoimmune movement disorders, focusing on antibody-mediated disorders of the CNS. Her lecture covered not only mechanisms of function, but also how to measure antibodies and the clinical presentation of GAD65, LG1, Caspr2, NMDA and Glycine Receptor-Antibodies.
Finally, Professor Pille Taba gave a presentation on movement disorders in Infectious diseases, covering presentations of several infections such as the historical encephalitis letargica, Japanese encephalitis, HIV or dengue.
