A Guideline Group is starting to look at the palliative care for people with multiple sclerosis. Dr Alessandra Solari, from Milan, has been leading an international group, including both neurologists and palliative care specialists. There will also be collaboration with the European Committee for Treatment and Research of Multiple Sclerosis (ECTRIMS), the European Network for Best Practice and Research in MS Rehabilitation (RIMS) and the Multiple Sclerosis Federation.
This follows on from the collaboration of the Scientific Panel on Palliative Care with the European Association for Palliative Care to publish the Consensus document on palliative care in neurology (Oliver et al) which showed increasing evidence that palliative care and a multidisciplinary approach to care do lead to improved symptoms and quality of life of patients and their families. Thus, there is a pressing need for increased collaboration between neurology and palliative care. The Group aims to produce a guideline that will enhance quality and support and safety within patient care and establish a framework for service development and the provision of healthcare services.
