Here we are, researchers have announced the creation of a living cell that has two ‘foreign’ DNA building blocks in its genome. We can now start reading a new chapter of science: from the creation of microbes capable of manufacturing entirely new proteins that could be used in medicine to ‘synthetic biology’ which could lead to the worrying prospect of new life-forms escaping from labs.
