EBC confirms it will go ahead with the Year of the Brain in 2014 but withdraws from the institutionally led process.
EBC communicated at length with European Commission President Barroso, his team and the different Directorate Generals over the last 2 years regarding our call to make 2014 the European Year of the Brain.
Our thoughts and ideas have been extremely well received, particularly the very large community outreach programme which we planned to run in every member state.
However it has become apparent, in light of the present economic situation and the difficulties that this has created for Europe that issues such as employment were more likely to be viewed favourably and a decision was unlikely to be made in line with the time necessary to adequately plan and deliver a successful year.
Therefore, EBC has formally withdrawn from an institutionally led Year of the Brain, rather we will organise and run the year ourselves together with our committed partners. We will continue to work very closely with the Commission, and many Commissioners have already offered their support for our plans.
EBC will now officially start towards delivering a Year of the Brain in Europe in 2014, together with our coalition of more than 200 organisations and you will hear much more over the coming months as our plans are further developed.
